Theory and Practice

What does the word Individualism mean to us as human beings living in these United States of America in the 21st century? It is a word and concept that is thrown around a lot by politicians and pundits, punks, plumbers, and proles of all sorts—but is there any content to this seemingly thoughtless verbiage? Invididual Liberty—solidified in Private Property—is the foundation of our system and the supposed guarantor of all our Rights, but this has been seriously undermined by not only modern theory but also modern practice. This is a forum to open up the discussion about what exactly this abstract idea—Individualism and its corollary Freedom—means or can mean in the context of the situation we as a people now find ourselves in.

Cogito Ergo Sum

I think, therefore I am. I am what? I am an Indivisible Individual. I am a whole, irreducible to my parts, with Constitutionally guaranteed Rights, which allow for the satisfaction of my own personal goals and desires. I am part of the smallest minority on earth: The Individual. I possess the inalienable (inviolable, undeniable, absolute) Right to my own life as prescribed by Nature or Nature’s God or just plain God or whatever it is we think still grants these privileges today. I am an end, in and of itself, not a means. I don’t owe anyone anything, and anybody that says otherwise can screw off! Only I know what’s best for me—not the State, not the Community, not my Family or Friends or Church or anyone else who has designs upon my Liberty. It’s just “me against the world” (right 2Pac?) and “making your way in the world today, it takes everything you got.” This is the natural way of the world: The War of All against All, Survival of the Fittest, Everyman for Himself, To Spoil Go the Victors, etc…Do you not agree? What are you a Communist? Get the hell out of my country! Go back to Russia…oh wait. No, go back to China! Oh yeah, they’ve given up on that too. How about Cuba? They’re still Communist, right?
